Chapter 20

“What do you think? Looks like a good place to stop?” Derek asked. “These kids really need to stretch their legs for a minute, too.”

“I be thinkin’ we stop were’n they no houses,” Myrus said. “Nowhere none can git us.”

“Me too,” Alison stood behind the driver's seat with a baby in her arms. “I know we have guns and that, but I’d rather not have to use them, personally.”

“I tells ya, if’n we dint need to get water I wo’ont be stoppen,” Myrus said.

“I can't believe we didn't check that before,” Derek frowned. “But then again, we didn't really have a lot of time to go over a checklist before we got in the RV.”

Myrus pulled into the access road, the park gates were open and there were no other vehicles to be seen. He stopped right beside a large water tank and Nancy stepped forward to the door, gun in hand. She didn't speak, no one did, as Lianne joined her and alighted the vehicle. The women looked around a little, checked the amenities block, then waved to the others to get out.

Myrus lifted Matty down the steps followed by Keely and Caleb, Alistair carried the toddler on one hip as Alison walked beside him carrying one baby, Marcos awkwardly carrying another. The sisters were next, Belle opened her arms to take the baby from Marcos as Myrus climbed up the water tank and connected a hose to the faucet near the amenities.

The children found the playground equipment and started to play, Alistair pushed the toddler in a baby swing and Reagan helped fill containers with water. It looked like a peaceful scene, like families playing in a park. Marcos climbed up to the roof of the large RV and pulled the hose back before folding it away into the rooftop compartment. When he was done, he looked around at the horizon as Myrus jumped down to check the tires. There were indeed no animals for as far as he could see. No insects bothered him, no chirping of crickets, no flies buzzing around, nothing. Marcos felt a new stab of fear in his stomach. If whatever happened here turned out to be a worldwide phenomenon, then they were in deep shit. No bees meant no plants, well, no fruiting plants, no vegetables. And no animals, well, he guessed they could all survive as vegans, but it would limit a lot of things, a lot of choices. Though no vegetables would make it hard to be a vegan. His thoughts whirled into black spaces, his confusion and fear strong.

“What do you see?” Reagan called up to him. “Can I come up?”

Marcos shrugged. “Sure, though there really isn't much to see. I mean, it depends on what you’re looking for.”

Reagan climbed up the side of the campervan, flying up the aluminium ladder with ease. She took Marcos’ proffered hand to make the last step and waved at the smaller children from her vantage point. Caleb waved back, excited, and Marcos saw him tugging at Myrus’ pant leg.
